SMALL THINGS 2011

In this ongoing series, I photograph objects with a large format camera and print them larger than life. I am interested by what we—today—consider "unimportant." Our contemporary culture trains us to ignore all things not directly effecting us in the present. We are over-stimulated. We must ignore the hundreds of cars passing us on the street; we must ignore the "crazy person" asking us for change. We see someone die by gunshot on TV every night. So we have lost our ability to consciously look at our surroundings. In order to just keep our eyes open, we must identify objects we see and then grade them by their cultural and personal significance: forgetting the objects we deem not worthy. The objects I'm photographing have no "real" significance; they could be anything. It's the un-named light that is important. We are just looking at light; everything is important.
